Giving Tuesday, a global day dedicated to generosity, has become a beacon of philanthropy around the world. Originating in 2012 as a counter-movement to the consumerism of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday encourages individuals, organizations, businesses, and communities to embrace the spirit of giving.

In Canada and Quebec, the initiative has been passionately embraced, with civic groups and volunteers collaborating to spread the message of generosity and encouraging diverse ways to contribute, whether through donations, volunteering, or community service. This year, with the backdrop of global challenges, Giving Tuesday remains a powerful reminder of the positive impact of collective goodwill.
Cultivating Generosity
The movement’s inception was driven by a desire to cultivate generosity in response to the commercial frenzy that kicks off the holiday season. The first Giving Tuesday in 2012 saw more than 2,700 partners raising $10 million in a single day, highlighting the potential of social networks and the power of a shared mission.
Since then, the movement has expanded internationally, with more than 75 countries officially participating. Each country adapts the Giving Tuesday brand to reflect its cultural identity, exemplifying a grassroots approach that encourages personalization and creativity.

The Fun of the Movement
One of the strengths of Giving Tuesday is its adaptability. Organizations can integrate the movement into their existing campaigns, using it to amplify their messages and reach. For instance, by launching a matching gift campaign on Giving Tuesday, organizations can double the impact of individual donations, making it more enticing for donors. Similarly, volunteer-driven activities, such as organizing food drives or community clean-ups, are excellent ways to engage local communities and highlight the diverse forms of generosity.
The movement also encourages creativity; businesses and individuals have embraced the initiative with innovative twists, such as “Giving Shoes Day” or “Giving Zoo Day,” demonstrating that the only limit is one’s imagination.

The special flavour of Quebec
In La Belle Province, the movement has taken on the unique flavor of “Ici on donne,” showcasing local generosity.
The success of Giving Tuesday in Quebec is attributed to the collaborative efforts of volunteers and civic leaders who dedicate their time to advancing the movement. Despite challenges such as limited resources and competing priorities, the commitment of volunteers has been instrumental in spreading the message of generosity across the province.
The Giving Tuesday Quebec grew from raising $1.25M in a day in 2019 to $4.22M in 2022!

As Giving Tuesday approaches on December 3rd, 2024, organizations and individuals are encouraged to plan their participation strategically. Whether by setting clear objectives, leveraging social media, or engaging local influencers, there are numerous ways to maximize impact.
Let’s exceed previous fundraising milestones, expand the number of participating organizations, and continue to inspire a culture of giving in Quebec. As the movement grows, it serves as a powerful reminder of the joy and fulfillment that comes from giving back, reinforcing the idea that generosity knows no bounds and can unite people across diverse backgrounds and communities.
